This statement reflects CADC's position on the matter and outlines our commitment to transparency, accountability, and the values that have guided our club for decades.
As a third generation activist in this historic club, I deeply respect the commitment of our elders, who built the first and oldest Democratic club advocating for Chinese Americans and Chinese immigrants in this country. I’m proud of CADC’s legacy—not just in its history, but in how it’s stayed true to its values.
CADC has always stood for independence and accountability. We were the first Democratic club to support the school board recall, to oppose Prop K, and to hold elected officials accountable when they betray public trust. Our decision to join the recall of Supervisor Joel Engardio isn’t just about Prop K itself. It’s about something more serious: honesty and integrity.
Engardio got elected by telling voters he would honor the Weekday Commute–Weekend Closure compromise for the Great Highway. He hid his real plan—to permanently close the Great Highway—from voters, especially from our Chinese community in the Sunset. He recently admitted that he’s been working toward this closure for four years. That means he lied to get elected. If he had been transparent from the start and still won, we would’ve respected that. But instead, he misled voters—and that’s something we cannot ignore.
CADC supported Engardio in every one of his three runs for supervisor over the last decade—twice in District 7, and most recently in District 4. What he’s done is an ultimate betrayal to CADC, to the voters who believed in him, and to the Sunset community that elected him. We don’t tolerate politicians who lie to win, then turn their backs on the people they promised to represent.
I’m also proud that CADC endorsed leaders like President Obama, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and State Senator Scott Wiener—we worked our tails off to help him win over Jane Kim! And of course, we’ve endorsed Mayor Ed Lee, Interim Mayor Mark Farrell, Mayor London Breed and Mayor Lurie. Win or lose, we’ve always made it clear that we stand for civil rights, and for Chinese Americans, uplifting working families, immigrants, and young people in San Francisco.
