BREAKING: Overwhelming Validity Confirms Sunset District’s Recall of Joel Engardio Is a Movement
San Francisco — The Chinese American Democratic Club (CADC) proudly congratulates the grassroots movement that has successfully pushed forward the recall of District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio. This is a victory for Sunset District residents—a majority of whom are Asian Americans, and nearly half of whom are immigrants—who have been ignored, dismissed, and strategically silenced by the very official who was elected to represent them. <Read More Below>

The San Francisco Department of Elections today confirmed that in a 5% random sample of the 10,985 signatures submitted, 545 out of 549 were valid, a staggering 99.3% validity rate. Even after adjusting for a single duplicate, the extrapolated validation rate remains an extraordinary 106.2%, far above the threshold needed to trigger a recall election.
This recall campaign was not backed by political machines or big donors—it was powered entirely by residents. Volunteers went door to door, stood at street corners, and poured their energy into collecting signatures in multiple languages, often from immigrant voters who felt they were being left out of key decisions impacting their neighborhood.
“This wasn’t just a petition—it was a statement,” said CADC First Vice President and a Sunset Resident Selena Chu. “Sunset residents, especially the immigrant and Asian American community, are tired of being used for votes and then ignored. This recall is what people power looks like.”

Supervisor Engardio has consistently bypass public input, made critical decisions behind closed doors, whether on community safety, housing, or transportation, all while ignoring the everyday needs of Sunset residents. We believe accountability matters. This validation result only strengthens our resolve. The people of District 4 have made it clear: they will not be steamrolled. They will organize, mobilize, and fight back.

"Our voices matter. Our district matters. And we will continue to fight for leadership that respects and reflects our community." said Julia Quon, CADC's Communication Chair, also a Sunset Resident.

While the Department of Elections has indicated it may take up to 20 more days for the final count, the overwhelming sample validation shows the truth: this recall is real, and it’s driven by a district that refuses to be sidelined. we thank every volunteer and resident who made this moment possible.
