Serving as the first female president of the Chinese American Democratic Club in the 21st century, it’s my honor to speak to you today.
This is a pivotal year. We have the power to shape the future of our nation and our city. We have the power to uplift families, immigrants and young people in San Francisco for greater success.
It has been CADC’s mission to empower Chinese American leaders. On behalf of CADC, I congratulate Members Lily Ho, Jade Tu and Michael Lai for winning a seat at the DCCC. I congratulate former CADC Board Member Nancy Tung for winning the Chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party.
CADC’s approach has been a win-win strategy.
In public education, we advocate for academic intervention for students who need more help, while championing excellent and rigorous curriculum for those who can do more.
I congratulate the seven cofounders of the Chinese Parent Advisory Council (CPAC) for your relentless grassroots leadership! After enduring 4 years of Chinese Exclusion and Anti-Asian sentiments, CPAC saw this morning.
This morning, SFUSD had finally kicked off the official Asian Parent Advisory Committee! This is the first time in the 173-year history of SFUSD, that Asian parents have a seat at the table!
The win-win lens is CADC’s guiding star. In housing, not only do we need housing at every price point, from what the seniors can afford to the young professionals. We must also create ownership opportunities for the Missing Middle - the immigrants and families, who could use 2 to 3 bedrooms and onsite parking.
We advocate for all modes of transportation, from Vision Zero to public transit to safe bike lanes. It's also imperative to support families who rely on cars as essential tools for taking their children to school, elders to clinics, and themselves to better choices of work.
We must support small businesses and merchants by ensuring their viability in the city. We must provide good access to storefronts including public transit and ample parking. We must bring tourism back because it is a multiplier for our economy, but this can only be done in tandem with strong public safety.
In public safety, we are committed to Smart Justice. While we support rehabilitation and second chances, we must also ensure accountability for those committing crimes including Anti-Asian violence.
One of the first recent waves of Anti-Asian violence hit CADC. Member Sasanna Yee’s grandma lost her life after being brutally attacked at 88 years old in a park where she exercised every morning. Thanks to Sasanna’s leadership of turning grief into strength, the Yik Oi Huang Peace & Friendship Park renaming will take place in Visitacion Valley on June 15th, and bring healing to this deeply hurt community.
Justin Go is with us today. Mr. Go is the father of Michelle Go, who was tragically pushed off a platform in a subway station in New York City. Michelle was a product of the Bay Area. I’m glad that the Michelle Go Act was introduced to increase Medicaid funding for psychiatric beds for people experiencing mental health crises, and keep our streets safer.
All-Win is CADC’s true north. We must build a better future by serving each and every resident and business in our city. We can’t back policies that pick and choose who is more worthy to stay in the city. We must choose that everyone gets to live and do business in the city. We must choose win-win and all-win solutions.
When we can treat every resident of our city like friends and families and every child like our own, we can unify to do great things. When we all win, San Francisco wins!
